Manchester United qualified for the fourth round of the FA Cup. Scott McTominay scored the only goal in the fifth minute in the game against Watford. Thus, Scott McTominay scored in the first match in which he led the team with the captain’s armband.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made nine changes from the match against Manchester City this week and gave a break to many of his key players. The Norwegian had to play Harry Maguire shortly before the break, as Eric Bailly suffered an injury.
The Red Devils started at a high pace and took the lead in the fifth minute. After a corner kick by Alex Telles, McTominey scored with a header, as the ball hit the ground and then found itself out of range of the goalkeeper. McTominey celebrated with a goal the first match in which he led the team with the captain’s armband.
Solskjaer’s team had a serious advantage and controlled the game. In the 16th minute, however, Axel Tuanzebe had to clear the ball at the goal-line, as Adam Masina was brought to a good position and shot past Henderson, but the defender was in the right place to prevent the ball from heading into the net.
Most of the situations was logically happened at Watford’s side. Eric Bailly missed a good chance after being left uncovered in the penalty area. The defender header went past the bar. The guests managed to reach dangerously the opponent’s area in the 32nd minute. when they had claims for a penalty, but the referee was having none of it. At the end of the first half, Eric Bailly suffered an injury. He tried to continue for a while, but was eventually replaced by Harry Maguire.
After the break, United’s game was not going well and the pace was not very high. The guests managed to organize couple of promising attacks, but did not create anything memorable. Marcus Rashford appeared on the field in the 69th minute and missed the best chance for the second half. He tried to spin the ball perfectly, but his shot did not trouble the visitors’ goalkeeper.
With the win Manchester United qualified for the fourth round of the FA Cup and are waiting the draw on Monday.
