Roy Keane speaks highly of Bruno Fernandes, but demands more

Bruno Fernandes’ ability to lift the entire Manchester United team has led to comparisons with club legend Eric Cantona, but former captain Roy Keane demands more from the Portuguese playmaker.

The Red Devils lost a fourth consecutive semi-final under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late last night 0-2 against Manchester City in the semi-final for the League Cup, and Fernandes himself largely failed to show the high level, which has earned him much praise in recent months.

“It’s not easy winning football trophies. Fernandes has had praise for the last few months and people have been comparing him to Cantona. He didn’t really do much tonight,” the former midfielder told Sky Sports. “The top players turn up in the big occasions. And that’s what the Cantonas used to do – they get their hands on trophies. That’s where this team are a little bit short.”

Fernandes’ performance so far in the season brought him a Player of the month award for November. Scoring 11 goals and giving 7 assists make him the 2nd most creative player in the league after Harry Kane.

Keane added: “The next game is always your most important game. Against Watford, Championship team, no doubt United will rotate and rest some players.”

The game with Watford is for the 3rd round of FA Cup this Saturday at Old Trafford. United will have chance to correct for its poor showing against Manchester City and return to winning.
