Red Devils fail to reach Carabao final after 0-2 defeat

Manchester City qualified for the League Cup final (Carabao Cup) and will fight for the fourth consecutive trophy, after beating city rival Manchester United 2-0 at Old Trafford.

John Stones and Fernandinho scored two goals in the second half, in which the symbolic guests had a serious advantage. Thus, Manchester City will face in the final Tottenham and Jose Mourinho. The final has been moved to a later date and is scheduled for April 24 at Wembley.

Solskjaer had made two changes to his starting lineup compared to the match against Aston Villa. Dean Henderson replaced David de Gea and Victor Lindelof returned to the center of defense instead of Eric Bailly. For City Sergio Aguero once again stayed on the bench. There were two changes made by Guardiola compared to the derby with Chelsea. Fernandinho replaced Rodri, and Riyad Mahrez was preferred to Bernardo Silva.

In the second minute Rashford was left alone against Steffen. The keeper saved his shot, but after a ricochet in John Stones the ball ended up in the net. However, the goal was correctly disallowed due to an offside by Rashford. In the fifth, Gundogan’s goal was disallowed for the same reason, after the midfielder intercepted a cross by Foden.

In the 24th minute we witnessed third ruled out goal. This time Foden broke away after a pass from Zinchenko and beat Henderson, but again there was an offside. Until the break, City held the ball for about 70% of the time, but United’s attacks seemed a little more direct. This did not lead to real goal situations, except once when Rashford found himself face to face with a guest goalie after a pass from Fred, but failed to control the ball.

Five minutes after the start of the second half, The Citizens came out ahead in the result. Foden crossed from a free-kick and Stones left alone on the far post intercepted at close range for 0-1.

In the 62nd minute Henderson intervened brilliantly again. This time the United keeper tipped a very good shot by Mahrez over the bar. United tried to put pressure, but only got a few inaccurate shots by Fernandes. Instead, City scored a second goal in the 83rd minute. Wan-Bissaka cleared with a bad header from a corner, after which the ball reached Fernandinho. The Brazilian shot from air, the ball bounced a few times and went into the net, while Henderson failed to intervene at all.

The Red Devils failed for the fourth time in a row to move past the semifinal phase of the tournaments in which they participate. A year ago, the Citizens tripped United again for the League Cup, and then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team lost the semi-finals for the Fa Cup and Europa League.
